SYMONDS, John Addington (1840-1893). Author & critic.
Autograph Letter Signed to the poet and critic Arthur Symons (1865-1945), 2 pages 8vo with envelope, on embossed writing paper of the Athenaeum Club, 26 October 1889. Regretting that they had failed to meet and attempting to arrange a meeting the following week.
'I was so busy at the Museum yesterday with Colvin & old engravings that I could not get away to see you. ...'
Sidney Colvin (1845-1927) was keeper of prints and drawings in the British Museum.
Symonds was a mentor to the younger Symons, encouraging his critical and poetical work. It would appear, however, that they failed to meet on this occasion. Symonds wrote to Symons the following month from Davos, declaring that he knew 'absolutely nothing about your past and present and yourself', and asking for a photograph.
