ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Composer.
Autograph Letter Signed to 'My dear Ronald', probably Sir Landon Ronald (1873-1938, conductor and champion of Elgar's music), 1 page 4to, Hereford, 13 February no year. An affectionate and amusing letter, signed 'Edward Elgar / Sprout monger', typically written in haste, commenting on his vegetable harvest and expressing the hope of meeting Ronald in the near future. Lightly dust-stained.
'I can only just turn from my score to scrawl this to reassure you. the Sprout Crop is splendid & is the admiration of the parish.
I rushed up for dinner last Tuesday & fled in the dawn of Wedy ...'
If written from Elgar's home, Plas Gwynn, the letter would have been written between 1 July 1904 and 31 December 1911. Sir Landon Ronald conducted many of Elgar's works, and gave the first Italian performance of his first symphony in 1910.
