CHARLES I (1600-1649). King of England, Scotland and Ireland.
Letter Signed ('Charles R') to Henry Cary, 1st Viscount Falkland (ca 1575-1633), ½-page folio with integral address-leaf with contemporary endorsements, Greenwich, 29 June 1629. Confirming Henry Leslie (1580-1661, later bishop of Down and Connor) as treasurer of St Patricks.
Lord Falkland received his peerage in 1620 and was appointed as lord deupty of Ireland in 1622.
Henry Leslie had been appointed to the treasury in the previous year. The present letter is a confirmation of that appointment. As it happens, a different patron had appointed Ambrose Aungier to the same living. The matter was eventually settled in Leslie's favour, and he took possession in 1632. He published a number of religious works during his lifetime, and frequently preached before the king (and later Charles II), the sermons often appearing in print. He had been made a royal chaplain in 1635.
'... whereas wee informed by our servaunt and chaplaine Henry Lesley, that upon our recomendation of him unto you for the Thresorshipp of St Pattricks in Duplyn. You did accordinglie preferre him thereunto. Whereof wee doe not only allowe and approve, but also doe hartily thanke you for it, and for p[re]serveing our right and title unto the said Tresorshipp, And in regard the said Henry Lesley hath obteyned a sentence in his favo[u]r for enioying the Tresorshipp: Our pleasure therefor is that you cause put his said sentence to due operation, whereby he may enioy the benefite of the said sentence, and of our graunt and gratious intent[i]on towards him. ...'
