BOER WAR
Autograph Letter Signed from Corporal T. Peter to his 'brother', 4 pages 8vo, 1st Gordon Highlanders, South African Field Force, 26 March 1900. Describing his part in the capture of Cronje's army and other aspects of army life, with many pious exhortations, his enthusiasm and descriptive powers far exceeding his acquaintance with the rules of punctuation.
The letter is signed 'Your Bro in Jesus', and it is not therefore clear whether he is writing to his own brother or to a fellow member of his religious community.
'... Apart from the warfare that is going on between the two armies there is also a great campaign of Spiritual work here, & I do thank God for His wonderful Blessings as many as 10 of my comrades were saved in one night. ... if God was against us the Boers would soon defeat us. ... Our Commanders here are good Christian men thoroughly saved Lord Roberts himself taking part in Gospel meetings & Sir G. White during the siege in Ladysmith led a daily prayer meeting attended by about 1,000 different people. Sir Charles Warren is also a child of God with such men as these are we can go anywhere. ...'
Together with a photograph of 10 troopers and two dogs relaxing by their gun carriages in the middle of the desert (rather tattered).
