POLE-CAREW, Sir Reginald (1849-1924). Lieutenant general.
Autograph Letter Signed to Lady Symons, 3 pages 8vo, Government House, Cape Town, 7 November 1899. A letter of sympathy on the death of his fellow-officer, Sir William Penn Symons who died of wounds received at the storming of Talana Hill.
'... He died the death of a gallant soldier - the death I think he would have chosen had he had the choice. ... It is disquieting to think that half, at least, of all the trouble might have been avoided, had our feeble Govt at home been able to make up its mind to prepare. ...'
