WARD, Mary Augusta (Mrs Humphry Ward) (1851-1920). Novelist and social worker.
Autograph Letter Signed to Hughes, 1 page 8vo, 61 Russell Square, 14 July 1889. Recommending a lady for the post of French correspondent for the Examiner by way of a letter from Westlake (no longer present).
The original Examiner, founded by John Hunt and Leigh Hunt in 1808 had ceased publication in 1881. It is not clear to what publication this letter relates, although it is possibly written to Thomas Hughes, author of 'Tom Brown's Schooldays'.
