Document Signed, 1 page folio (oblong) on vellum with papered seal, given at Hampton Court, 18 July 1665/6 ('in the 17th year of our Reigne' - i.e. dating from 1649). Appointing Arthur Ingram ensign to a company of foot. Countersigned by Henry Bennett, 1st Earl of Arlington (1618-1685). 'Charles by the grace of God King of England Scotland, France & Ireland Defender of the faith etc. To Our Trusty & Wellbeloved Arthur Ingram Gent Greeting. Wee doe by these presents constitute & appoint you to bee Ensigne of a Company of Foot in the Admiralls Regiment of Foot whereof S[i]r John Griffin Kn[igh]t is Captain. You are therefore carefully to discharge the duty of an Ensigne by excercising the sd Company in Armes both Officers & souldiers & to keep them in good order & discipline. And Wee doe hereby command them to obey you as their Ensigne. And you are to observe such Orders as you shall from time to time receive from your Captaine or other your superiour Officer according to the discipline of Warre ...'Although Charles II was crowned in April 1661 documents from his reign are generally dated, as in this case, as though he had immediately succeeded his father in 1649.
