Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs [Lewis] Powles, a neighbour in Rye, 2 pages 8vo, Lamb House, Rye, 13 May 1937. Declining an invitation as has a guest on Whitsunday.
'... I finished up last night by going to the bonfire, & after that I felt that I had had nearly enough. Many thanks for the Spectator article which I return. We meet I imagine tomorrow at the Council meeting.'
E.F. Benson served as mayor of Rye (the 'Tilling' of the Mapp and Lucia novels) between 1934 and 1937, living in Henry James's old house.
