DEBUSSY, Claude (1862-1918). French composer.
Autograph Letter Signed to his close friend René Peter, 1 page 8vo (small paper-clip stain), 'Samedi', no date but 1899 to 1904 since it mentions Madame Debussy. A brief friendly note, slightly mysterious, with translation.
'... ça n'est pas pour me vanter ... [Debussy's dots] mais tu soignes les symbÔles de ta joi .... C'est d'ailleurs tout à fait aimable et Madame Debussy y a été très sensible (comme de bien entendu) ...'
'... It is not to praise myself ... but one must look after the symbols of ones joy .... Besides, it is very friendly, and Madame Debussy is very aware of it (as is well understood). ...'
See the Correspondence 1872-1918, ed. Denis Herlin (to whom we are grateful for an accurate transcript which accompanies the letter), Paris 2005, page 710.
