A power of attorney from Stephenson to his nephew. '... Whereas the said Robert Stephenson is desirous that as well during any absence of him the said Robert Stephenson from this Country as during his residence therein his estate and affairs in the United Kingdom should be managed and conducted by the said George Robert Stephenson in thee same manner and with the same uncontrollable power and discretion and as effectually to all intents and purposes whatsoever as if the said Robert Stephenson were personally present to manage and conduct the same. Now this Indenture witnesseth that for effectuating the purposes aforesaid He the said Robert Stephenson Hath made nominated constituted and appointed and in his place and stead put and by these presents Doth make nominate constitute and appoint and in his place and stead put the said George Robert Stephenson ...' etc. etc.George Robert Stephenson was the son of George Stephenson's brother Robert and thus first cousin of Robert Stephenson (1803-1859). He was a considerable engineer in his own right, although he initially worked closely with his uncle, from whom he was to inherit about a third of his fortune.
