GOUNOD, Charles François (1818-1893). French composer.
Autograph Music Manuscripts of the openings of 10 cantiques for voice and organ, each on a separate leaf, folio, no date [ca 1870].
Each of the ten pages (with titlepage and some blank leaves) is written on one side only and comprises the melody line with the organ accompaniment represented only by the opening chord, at the foot the source of each cantique is identified.
In 1870 Gounod published 6 Cantiques avec accompagnement de piano ou d'orgue to texts by A. de Ségur (the papal nuncio, who had greatly approved of the church scene in Faust). It is possibly that the present manuscript could date from the same period, although the texts are selected by Gounod from the 1740, 1750 and 1760 collections of Cantiques spirituels [hymns].
