MANBY, George William (1765-1854). Inventor of apparatus for saving life from shipwreck.
Autograph Letter Signed to Robert Cole, 1 page 4to with vignette, Southtown, Great Yarmouth, 25 November 1843. Recalling his days as a schoolfellow of Nelson.
'... his first school was at Durham Market kept by Mr Noaks; which seminary was recommended to Capt Maurice Suckling, by my father Capt M.P. Manby, a great friendship having been formed between them in Service, I think it was at the taking of Quebec, in confirmation of which friendship, young Nelson used often to come to my fathers residence ... & accompany me home on a Saturday & returning with me to School on the Monday.'
A vignette at the head depicts the spot ('near the Nelson Pillar') where the first life was saved from shipwreak with the device invented by Manby.
