DELIUS. Frederick (1862-1934). English composer.
Autograph Music Quotation Signed of the opening theme of Appalachia, on an album page, 180 x 210 mm. (ca 7 x 8½ inches), dated 22 November 1907. Rather tattered at the edges and a little age-soiled, but the quotation and signature with large clean margins.
Appalachia, sub-titled 'American Rhapsody' or 'Variations on an old Slave Tune', was written in 1896. It brought Delius to the attention of Thomas Beecham in 1907 (the year of this autograph quotation), who thereafter became a champion of the Yorkshire composer's music. This example is of the first four bars of the opening horn theme.
