NARES, Sir George Strong (ca 1831-1915). Admiral and Arctic explorer.
Autograph Letter Signed to a bookseller, 2 pages 8vo with integral blank leaf, HMS Alert, Portsmouth, 24 May 1875. Ordering four books (one deleted from the list) on the eve of his departure for the Arctic.
Having been recalled early from the highly successful Challender voyage Nares was put in charge of a government-backed Arctic expedition in the Alert and Discovery, which sailed from Portsmouth on 29 May 1875 with the aim of reaching the North Pole. In the event, although achieving considerable success, the entire expedition was called off in 1876 after an outbreak of scurvy on both ships.
It is instructive to see that Nares wished to take with him works on British and European history.
