MEDIEVAL DOCUMENT, late 13th century
A Charter of enfeoffment in the name of Walter Woodcock (Wodecock) of Bere Ferrers, Devon. 161 x 257 mm. (6½ x 10 inches) on vellum. Seal tag (no seal).
Granting a messuage and associated curtilage and crofts plus four acres of arable land in Bere Ferrers (described in detail) plus his meadow in the village and pasture rights for two animals for four marks to Henry of Lenston and his daughter Joan and Joan's legitimate descendants, with remainder over, if Joan has none, to Henry's daughter Christine and her legitimate descendants, with further remainder over, if Christine has none, to Henry's son John and his legitimate descendants, and if he has none, a final remainder over to Henry's next heirs, with a promise of warranty. Seven apparently local witnesses. Undated, but the handwriting suggests that it belongs to the second half of the thirteenth century.
