BERNSTEIN, Leonard (1918-1990). American composer and conductor.
Programme for the 'Homage to Stravinsky', concert at the Albert Hall, 6 April 1972, inscribed to Lina [Lalandi], 24 pages folio and cover in fine condition. The inscription is to the founder of the English Bach Festival and promoter of the concert, which was conducted by Bernstein.
Leonard Bernstein had just (in March) accepted the honorary position of President of the English Bach Festival. A facsimile copy of his letter of thanks is illustrated in the programme. There is also an introduction by Bernstein giving an account of his shock at the death of Stravinsky a year earlier, correcting, for the first time, a supposed comment he was said to have made on that occasion, and offering this performance (of the Rite of Spring, Capriccio for piano and orchestra, and Symphony of Psalms) in tribute to the composer's memory. Among other articles is a personal reminiscence of Stravinsky by Lina Lalandi, the distinguished Greek harpsichordist, who was a personal friend.
Sold on behalf of the English Bach Festival Trust.
