STRAVINSKY, Igor (1882-1971). Russian composer. Autograph music motif, comprising the notes 'BACH' in red and black ink, signed 'I Str' in red, 100 x 150 mm. (4 x 6 inches). On the reverse is the beginning of an aborted attempt at the same effect. The Greek harpsichordist, Lina Lalandi, has recorded the circumstances in which Stravinsky made this intriguing memento. It was in Athens in 1966 where the composer was to conduct a performance of Oedipus Rex in a concert presented by the English Bach Festival Trust: 'That same day, being in the best of humours, he made a most fascinating drawing on Bach's name ... in which by turning it round one can read the letters BACH and also most cunningly the notes BACH by altering the clefs - all round one single note. This he did with great glee, and having initialled it gave it to me with a flourish.' (From the programme of the 'Homage to Stravinsky' concert at the Royal Albert Hall, 6 April 1972). Sold on behalf of the English Bach Festival Trust. [No: 21878]
