GOSSEC, François-Joseph (1734-1829). French composer.
Document dated Paris, 25 NivÔse an 2 [24 January 1794], partly printed and signed by Gossec, Luigi Cherubini and Bernard Sarrett on the recto. With a nine-line autograph note signed by Gossec on the reverse dated 12 brumaire an 12 [4 November 1803].
The printed document is a receipt from Sarrette on behalf of the Association des Artistes Musiciens for 40 livres as part of the interest relating to the operations of the Association; Cherubini and Sarrette sign in their capacity of commissioners. On the verso Gossec writes that he acknowledges having received from Sarrette 600 livres as reimbursement of capital.
Gossec, as well as being extremely active as a composer, held a number of important official posts from 1780 onwards and especially during the Revolutionary period; from 1789 he and Sarrette directed the Corps de Musique de la Garde Nationale. Sarrette was founder of the Paris Conservatoire.
