HERTFORD, Richard Seymour-Conway (1800-1870). Fourth Marquess of Hertford. Art collector.
Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 2½ pages 8vo (laid down on the remains of an album leaf), no place, 'Friday', no date. Negotiating for the purchase of a ?work of art (the word not yet deciphered), following a visit to Chenies (home of the Russell / Bedford family), and railing against dealers.
'... If, as you said, you still think the [not deciphered] too large for your house I will take them, if we agree on the price & that is a very easy matter as between Gentlemen one word is sufficient - not so, as you & I will know when one has to do with dealers & when the system of plunder, as you so very properly call it, is obliged to be resorted to. ...'
