PHILLIPPS, Sir Thomas (1792-1872). Antiquary and bibliophile.
Characteristically slovenly and curmudgeonly Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Collett, 2½ pages 16mo (rather soiled), 'Th' [Thirlestaine House, Cheltenham], 2 September 1870. Complaining of his ill-treatment by a box-maker.
'... You have sent me keys that will not open or lock the Boxes.
And you send the Boxes in a most dirty state with a quantity of shavings inside.
[PS] I will have no more made if you do not make every key fit every lock.'
There is no mention of a Collett in the index to the five volumes of Phillipps Studies by A.N.L. Munby. The date '1871' has been supplied in pencil by a later hand, but Phillipps himself certain wrote '70'.
