HUGHES, Thomas (1822-1896). Author of 'Tom Brown's School Days'.
Autograph Letter Signed to [Lord] Reay, 2 pages 8vo (facing), 7 October 1883. Explaining that he had just returned from America and that pressing legal obligations would prevent his accepting an invitation from the Town Clerk of Galashiels, and, presumably, from Reay himself.
'... besides the holiday arrears of my circuit, always pretty heavy, I find the new Bankruptcy Act & orders which I must master before it comes into operation. Wherefore it will be impossible me to get away (except for 4 days to keep term at the Temple in Novr) before Xmas. ...'
Donald James Mackay, 11th Baron Reay (1839-1921), was to be governor of Bombay from 1885 to 1890.
