SCOTT, Sir George Gilbert (1811-1878). Architect.
Autograph Letter Signed to the Dean of Bristol, 3 pages 8vo, Spring Gardens, 28 January 1859. Sending a report on the proposed arrangements at Bristol Cathedral and commenting on them.
Although Scott was responsible for restoration work at many English cathedrals, Bristol does not appear to have been among the number, and the present letter may perhaps refer to a plan which was never accomplished. The major work at Bristol in the nineteenth century, which entailed the completion of the building (the nave having been demolished after the dissolution of the Abbey in 1539) was undertaken by George Edmund Street and completed in 1868.
I send you herewith my report upon the arrangement of your cathedral which is in the main what I had already communicated to you excepting that I have rather pressed it with arguments.
'I send a slight plan with those of Mr. Pope shewing the arrangement I have proposed. I have shewn a certain number of moveable seats supposing the remainder to be filled with chairs as at Westminster Abbey.
I will send the drawings by railway ...'
