Autograph Letter Signed to [Patrick James?] Smyth, in French, 2 pages 8vo (on writing paper of the Shelbourne Hotel), Dublin, 18 August 1871. Regretting that he had been unable to meet Smyth in London, and his inability to do so on leaving 'your Ireland' to return home to Paris. Patrick James Smyth (1826-1885), MP for Westmeath, 1871-1880,had lived in exile in the United States from 1848 to 1856. De Lesseps, on a triumphal visit to England to celebrate Anglo-French co-operation over the Suez Canal, refers to the warm reception received by his deputation in Dublin, and to his correspondent's well-known sympathy with France.
