Evidently an apologia for having written a critical piece about his correspondent and stating that an interview would bring neither pleasure nor profit. '... I can truly say, that is is no pleasure to mortify or to disappoint expectation & that I never wrote a line which i could not as willingly have signed as not - the solitary use of the anonymous being that it enables one, when in the world, to lay aside the weariness of a most unthankful calling ...'
