[RODNEY, George Bridges, 1st Baron] (1719-1792). Admiral.
Contemporary copies of three documents consequent to Rodney's defeat of the French under De Grasse off Dominica, 1782.
1. Resolution from the members of the House of Commons conveying their thanks to the officers under Rodney's command for their 'Gallant Conduct, on the said late most Glorious Occasion', 1 page folio, 22 May 1782.
2. A similar, but longer resolution from the House of Lords, 2 pages folio, 27 May 1782.
3. Copy of a letter to Rodney signed by Philip Stephens, 3 pages folio, Admiralty Office, 1 June 1782, conveying the King's personal gratitude for his success.
'... His Majesty was graciously pleased to express and to command that it might be signified to you in the strongest terms, his highest approbation of your spirited and judicious conduct upon the Occasion and his highest satisfaction in the account you have given of the Bravery and Gallant behaviour of all the officers and men ... more especially the Rear Admirals Hood and Drake, Commodore Affleck and Sir Charles Douglas your first Captain. ...'
