TURNER, J.M.W. (1775-1851). Landscape painter. Autograph Letter Signed to W[illiam] B[ernard] Cooke (1778-1855, line engraver), 1 page 8vo with address-leaf (the latter trimmed), 6 February 1825. Characteristically alluding to his debts. Turner's relationship with his engraver and publisher was a difficult one, and although it is said (Turner, a Life, by James Hamilton, 1997, pages 220 ff.) to have resulted in much acrimonious correspondence, no letters to Cooke are printed by John Gage (Collected Correspondence, 1980) and the present letter appears to be unpublished. 'I have bad news to tell you. I have this day found your 4 Months Bill, so it was not paid away. ... [PS] as the other Bill was due on the 14th (the 2 month's) what time shall you want for the lost sheep.' [No: 20821] The image excludes the address-panel.
