![]() ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Composer. Three Autograph Letters Signed to Novellos, 3 pages 4to, Worcester, 31 August, 10 and 19 September 1932, with related duplicate typescript correspondence from Novellos. Asking them to negotiate a fee with the North Staffs District Choral Society to conduct performances of King Olaf, The Music Makers and Sea Pictures. 'I am greatly obliged to you for your letter and shall be further obliged if you will be kind enough to write to the N. Staffs people: I am free on the 27th October, but the question of any possible fee is not mentioned ... .'Elgar composed 'Scenes from the Saga of King Olaf' in 1896, when he was becoming more confident of his abilities. In the latter years of his life, he produced no further major work, although on the occasion of his 75th birthday in 1932 it was announced that the BBC had commissioned him to write his third symphony.
