ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Composer.
Autograph Letter Signed ('Ed Elgar') to his publishers, Novello & Co. ('Dear Sirs'), 1 page 8vo, Hereford, 11 October 1908. Acknowledging receipt of the proofs of the third movement [of the First Symphony].
Elgar had worked tirelessly on his First Symphony during the summer of 1908 despite interruptions. But when he completed the score on 25 September reaction set in. He went to London at the end of the month taking the Finale score to his publisher, but returned 'rather out of heart with world in general'. On reaching Hereford he fell ill again until more Symphony proofs arrived in mid October.
