CHAMBERLAIN, Joseph (1836-1914). Statesman.
Good Autograph Letter Signed to Lord Reay, 4 pages 8vo, Highbury, Moor Green, Birmingham, 16 December 1885. Congratulating Reay on his appointment 'to the great position of Governor of Bombay', expatiating on his opportunities in that post, and discussing the position of the government.
'... There is great work before you & real responsibility which makes the post very much more important than the one which some time ago you declined. ... There is compensation in the performance of so honourable a duty & the opportunities of service to the State are rare in this country &, for Peers especially, likely to become rarer.
When you come back the Democracy(?) will be in full swing - thanks to the admirable way in which Lord Salisbury has played the Radical hand in order once more to still the Whigs. It will be a costly game for himself & his Party. ...'
