BALDWIN, Stanley, 1st Earl (1867-1947). Prime Minister 1923-1924, 1924-1929 and 1935-1937.
Autograph Letter Signed to 'Dear Woods', 2 pages 8vo, Astley Hall, Stourport, 3 May 1915. Sending personal news and commenting on the war.
'... You have of course seen Buckle's death in February.
It is very sad for his widow: they had made the rectory a delightful house. The new rector is one Proctor from Worthing. He has been sort of chaplain to a convent for many years and likes to be called "Father". I hope he may suit our country folk but I feel apprehension.
I am very busy and shall be till the war is over. We have 957 men enlisted from our business or about one in six.'
