LAWRENCE, T.E. (1888-1935). 'Lawrence of Arabia'.
Engine test sheets, signed at the end 'T.E. Shaw A/C', 3 pages folio on separate leaves with filing holes in the margins, dated 11 September 1933. A relic of Lawrence's service with the Royal Air Force where he worked on high speed rescue craft.
The sheets record tests of marine engines of the type installed in powered dinghies used for ferrying air and ground crews to moored flying boats and for general coastal duties. "[Lawrence] personally worked on, tested, modified and helped design boats which created a minor revolution in the shipbuilding world. In 1929, when he first became interested in design, RAF launches were of a standard Admiralty pattern. They were heavy, slow and costly. When Lawrence left the RAF in 1935, not one type of RAF boat in production was of naval design." Knightly and Simpson, The Secret Lives of Lawrence of Arabia, page 242.
