DVORAK, Antonin (1841-1904). Composer.
Requiem Mass, opus 89, piano score, Novello's original octavo edition, 1891, signed on the titlepage 'Antonin Dvorak' in ink. Bound in full limp morocco by C Cooper and Company of Birmingham (spine a little worn) with Stabat Mater, opus 58.
Dvorak composed the Requiem in 1890 and it was first performed in Birmingham in 1891, the compsoer conducting. It is quite likely that the present score was signed on that occasion. Dvorak is quoted as saying of Birmingham:
'... I'm here in this immense industrial city where they make excellent knives, scissors, springs, files and goodness knows what else, and, besides these, music too. And how well! It's terrifying how much the people here manage to achieve.'
