NEWMAN, John Henry (1801-1890). Cardinal. Leader of the Oxford movement.
Autograph Letter Signed to the publisher [Basil Montagu] Pickering (1836-78), 3 pages 8vo on black-edged paper, The Oratory [Birmingham], 3 June 1875. Thanking him for a cheque, and commiserating with him on a catastrophic fire.
'... I am sorry of course for the loss by fire - and hope you have not lost books of your own also. It is surprising I have not lost stock of the kind before. There was a fire at my Printer's at Dublin - and I think there was a bad one at Longmans' years ago. I suppose it is a loss - for I have generally considered that the author's gain is the last third of the gross sale. ... I am sorry, on reading over your letter, to see that you imply that the fire has not spared your own books. ...'
Pickering, a bookseller and publisher and son of William Pickering, published Newman's Miscellaneous Writings, 1875-77.
