DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Novelist.
Autograph Letter Signed to Miss (sic) Dora Hoskyns, 1 page 16mo with autograph envelope, Office of All the Year Round, Thursday 17 September 1868. Politely returning 'the enclosed verses' [no longer included] as being unsuitable for the pages of his magazine.
Not in The Letters of Charles Dickens, Pilgrim Edition, and apparently unpublished. Dora Hoskyns may possibly be identified with the Mrs Hoskyns to whom Dickens wrote on 5 August 1869 (Vol. 12, page 389) declining an article, The Pariahs of Europe, and referring to May Day amongst the Mules, which he promises to publish. She may be identified with Dorothea Ann Eliza, daughter of the Rev George Stamp Robinson Bt., formerly Rector of St John Cranford and St Andrew Cranford, and his wife Emma Blencowe. She married Anthony Hiley Hoskyn/Hoskins (both spellings are found) in 1865.
