SCOTT, Sir Walter (1771-1832). Novelist & poet. Autograph Letter Signed to [Sophia] Dumergue (1768-1831), 1½ pages 8vo with integral blank and a separate address-panel, Abbotsford '6th November' [endorsed '1828']. Concerning a letter or memorandum, perhaps in connection with a legal case. I have made every search in my power for the interesting memorandum you mention but cannot recall it. I had it from Mr Scott of Harden & copied it many years ago from an internal conviction that the prediction would be fulfilled. The writers name has now escaped me but Dr Ainslie of London claims the merit of having written the letter. If it had been written by your excellent brother I am sure his name could not have escaped me. I ought to be ashamed to return such a confused answer to a plum question ... I expect Harden here soon who has the letter if it still in existence (sic) and may be able to throw more light upon it than I can at this distance of time.'Sophia Dumergue, daughter of Charles Francis Dumergue, who had come to England as French Ambassador and later because surgeon to George II and dentist to the Prince of Wales, was a close friend of the Scotts.
