BURTON, Sir Richard Francis (1821-1890). Explorer and orientalist.
Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs ?Inglefield in Vevey (Switzerland), 1½ facing pages, oblong 4 x 5 inches) with envelope, Hotel (indecipherable), 24 December 1888. A rather enigmatic and characteristically illegible letter
'The Author is Philo Judaeus of whom a ?first edition has lately been published. Cordal thanks for your kind offer to lend me Swedenborg, but I ... have additionally no time for light literature.'
A two volume edition of the works of Philo Judaeus was published in London in 1888, and is no doubt that to which Burton here refers. His description of Swedenborg as 'light literature' can only be in jest.
