CARLYLE, Thomas (1795-1881). Essayist and historian.
The lower half of an 8vo Autograph Letter Signed, the recipient unknown, irregularly cut to accomodate the signature ('T. Carlyle'). The interesting contents of the letter allude to a mysterious 'them' and their fatal flaw.
'... which one may define as fatal, on the very threshold, to the chance of any deep or heroic "deed" ever coming out of them. This, I am afraid, is a quite incurable defect of theirs; and it limits their possibilities of usefulness, under their best conceivable form, to a very narrow compass. ...'
