HENSLOW, John Stevens (1796-1861). Botanist.
Autograph Manuscript headed 'In re Starch', 4 pages 8vo, signed at the foot, no date. Together with 4 Autograph Letters Signed and an A.N.S. from George Henslow. Henslow's son George explains in a note from Titchfield Terrace that 'the description how to make starch from potatoes was practised by my father in 1846 when the potato disease was so bad'.
Two of George Henslow's letters are on scientific matters. It was John Stevens Henslow as professor of botany at Cambridge who had recommended Darwin, his favourite pupil, as naturalist for The Beagle.
