CANNING, George (1770-1827). Prime Minister 1827.
Autograph Letter Signed to the Marquis of Buckingham, 2 pages 4to (soiled, especially on the reverse, old repairs, seal adhering to the front), Foreign Office, 9 Sep 1809. Answering what appears to be a complaint about the behaviour of a tax gatherer.
'... The Tax gatherer has clearly the Law on his side, & they do not appear to be aware at the Treasury in what manner they can interfere to check, or reverse, his proceeding. In this state of things I would no longer delay the acknowledgement of your Lordship's Letter, & it's [sic] inclosures, & assuring your Lordship that I will omit no endeavour to remedy the evil, or at least the prevent it's recurance.'
