SHAW, George Bernard (1856-1950). Playwright.
Early Autograph Letter Signed ('G. Bernard Shaw') to Miss [Edith Maurice] Vance, 1 page 8vo, 10 Adelphi Terrace, 25 November 1899. Sending her a ticket, and explaining the difficulty of obtaining it.
'... My only chance against hundreds of applications was to have no tickets at all. As there are about 530 seats available, and some 580 people (members & guests) are entitled to admission, I advise you to go pretty soon after the opening of the doors. None of the seats are reserved.'
Edith Maurice Vance (1860-1930) was a freethinker who had come under the influence of Annie Besant. A copy of the address delivered at her cremation by Chapman Cohen is included with the present letter.
Apparently unpublished, not in Collected Letters, ed Dan H Laurence.
