SIDGWICK, Henry (1838-1900). Philosopher and ethicist.
Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 3½ pages 8vo, Hill Side, Chesterton Road, Cambridge, 16 September 1887. A lengthy letter declining, with characteristic argument, to be associated with a new religious movement.
'... You are quite right in assuming that I have - to a certain extent - a sincere sympathy with the efforts which you propose to make, in Cambrdige, on behalf of religion unfettered by ecclesiastical conventions. ... I wish to refrain from all expression of opinion whatever on the great subjects on which you will discourse. ...'
Sidgwick adds, in an extensive postcript, the explanation that his views had altered in the twenty or so years since he had taken part in the 'Free Christian Union'.
