BURNSIDE, Ambrose Everett (1824-1881). American army commander.
Autograph Letter Signed to O R Larned, 2 pages 8vo (the second leaf neatly inlaid), on board ship, 12 August 1870. Describing the first few days of his journey to England and making arrangements for communication by telegraph after his arrival.
To judge by the state of the handwriting the sea was anything but smooth.'I drop this off at Queenstown. We have had a fair passage, the first day good, the second third and fourth pretty rough, the rest fair. Mrs Burnside has been sea sick, but is now better. I have been well. We have but few passenders, so have plenty of room, and ample accomodation.
Please don't fail to go to the main telegraph office, and tell them that I will ('simply' deleted) address my telegraphs to You simply Lorned New York and you address me Burnside, London. I will write you from London by each mail. Please write me, and telegraph if anything of importance occurs... .'
