ORTON, Arthur (1834-1898). The Tichborne Claimant.
Two Autograph Letters Signed to Mrs E ?Hamnett, 3 pages 8vo (one slightly damaged and laid down), Court of the Queen's Bench and 34 Bessborough Street, 13 and 31 January 1874. Written during Orton's trial for perjury after the failure of his claim against the Tichborne estates, and signed 'R.C.D. Tichborne', the first sending a note of admission to the court, and second declining a request.
The trial of Orton's case against the Tichborne estates lasted 102 days, and was followed by his trial for perjury, lasting 188 days. On 28 February 1874 he was sentenced to 14 years' penal servitude.
