CHARLES I (1600-1649). King of England, Scotland and Ireland.
Document Signed ('Carolus R') at the foot, 1 page folio on vellum (slightly discolored, neatly inlaid) with the King's red wax signet, Newcastle, 4 January 1646/7. Written in a neat Italic hand, in Latin, the document is a letter of recommendation for Colonel Roger Whitley addressed to all foreign princes.
The King had been held prisoner in Newcastle by the Scots, to whom he had, in desperation, surrended the previous May. Two days prior to signing this document, the King had seen the Scots army leave Newcastle to be replaced by that of the Parliamentarians under Skippon who subsequently took him to London and his death.
[No: 19952]
