TOLKIEN, John Ronald Reuel (1892-1973). Author of The Lord of the Rings.
Typewritten Letter Signed ('J R R Tolkien') to fellow Oxford don Jonathan Wordsworth, 1 page 8vo with envelope signed with initials, Headington, Oxford, 6 June 1966. Headed 'Society', the letter declines an invitation to dine with Armstrong in London, as he will be unable to get to town.
The Society was an exclusive Oxford dining club whose membership included, besides Tolkein, C S Lewis, David Cecil, Nevill Coghill and other Oxford luminaries. Dinners took place under the aegis of members in their respective colleges but in this case an alternative London venue had been proposed.
