Poignant Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed woman ('Dear Madam'), 2 pages 8vo on writing paper of The Athenaeum, 8 March 1920. Taking upon himself and his generation the burden of alleviating the sorrows caused by recent history ('It's no use crying over spilt human lives now. We must try to make the republic of the spirit bigger & strong').
'... Yes, these are bad times in which to live; and yet I can't help thinking that much of the blame rests upon ourselves - upon us younger ones, I mean. Not that I think that the sense of isolation could ever disappear in such a person as myself ... .'
