KELLER, Helen Adams (1880-1968). American author & lecturer; lost sight and hearing at 19 months.
Lengthy and flamboyant Typewritten Letter Signed to Captain Frank H Claret aboard the S.S. Minnewaska, 2½ pages 4to with envelope, 93 Seminole Avenue, Forest Hills, 25 October 1929. Waxing lyrical about the sea, with suitably aquatic metaphors ('it is my failing to sail on and on without arriving at any proper destination'), and congratulating him on using a braille compass.
'... In what Mr Holmes told me about you I recognized a fine, decisive spirit. It is curious how a strong personality reaches us through space, so that we have a vivid sense of knowing its potentiality. I clearly visualize you against a background of sky and water, tall ships, tumultuous waves white-crested, and sea-gulls' wings, shouting winds and whales' broad backs going by. ...'
