SCRIBE, Augustin Eugène (1791-1861). French playwright. Autograph Letter Signed in French to an unnamed correspondent ('Mademoiselle'), 1 page 8vo, no place, 26 November, no year. Informing her that a post has been created for a surveyor of young girls' allowances, congratulating her on her recent success, and saying how happy he was to have been able to help her. Augustin Scribe was probably the most successful French dramatist of the first half of the 19th century. He wrote more than 300 plays, sometimes in collaboration, which consisted mainly of vaudevilles and comedies of manners, but also included historical and political comedies. Among his best known works are Mon Oncle César, Le Mariage d'Argent, Une Chaine and Bertrand et Raton. [No: 0268]
