[STRICKLAND, Agnes] (1796-1874). Historian and novelist.
Collection of 8 letters to Agnes Strickland and one to Jane Strickland (her sister), various locations, between 1829 and 1850 where dated. Various letters to Agnes, one from Lord Howe thanking her on behalf of Queen Adelaide for her latest book. Also a heated note from Jane to Mr Ady, an accountant, concerning a false claim for rent.
Agnes Strickland was best known for her work The Lives of the Queens of England which she produced in conjunction with her elder sister Elizabeth. Although the book sold well, the authors received little remuneration due to an unbusiness-like agreement with Henry Colburn, the publisher. Jane Strickland (1800-1888) also produced less known literary works, and wrote a biography of her sister Agnes published in 1887.
