PHILLPOTTS, Eden, autographs, letters, documents, manuscripts

PHILLPOTTS, Eden (1862-1960). Poet, playwright and novelist.
Five Autograph Letters Signed (one with initials), to H Locock and 'My dear friend', 7½ pages 8vo and a postcard, Torquay and Kerswell, Broadclyst, Exeter, 1924 to 1944. Remarking on the war and his hopes for the future, and giving instructions about how to cope with gout.
'... We are under control of the R.A.F. here & billet them - very good fellows & very popular. One only asks for Justice for the vermin we are fighting. If they get that, their thieves' kitchens should at least be emptied; but it will probably be necessary to destroy a couple of million more before they begin to yelp. ...'
'... One thing is a fact: that the older we grow, the less acute pain & anguish result from attacks of gout. Mine now-a-days is of the mildest quality - vastly different from the doses I suffered during manhood & middle-age. ...'
'... May we bring brains & intelligence to implement that Peace, when it arrives, & give neglected human reason a chance.'

Traces of former mounting in the margins of the letters, not affecting the text.
